NEW YORK – Express basketball sophomore standouts
Salimah Williams and
Steven McGriff were honored by the region on Thursday evening by being named Region 15 Athlete of the Month Honorable Mentions for January. This marks the second time that these two have earned this distinction, the first being for the month of November.

Williams led the nationally ranked No. 6 Monroe University - Bronx women's basketball team to an 8-3 record in January, including three victories over then-nationally ranked teams. She scored 21 points with eight rebounds against the now 13
th-ranked team in the country Bronx Community College on January 27. The Jersey City resident also added 23 points and six boards in a key road win at No. 6 Onondaga Community College back on January 11. Williams reached double figures in scoring seven times, while scoring at least 20 points three times this past month.
McGriff propelled the nationally ranked No. 15 Express men's basketball team to a 5-0 record in Region 15 play this month. He had a near double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds, while distributing three assists, against No. 6 Northampton Community College on January 24. The Brooklyn resident provided 17 points and eight rebounds to lead the Express to a tight 70-67 road regional win at Hostos Community College back on January 15. McGriff reached double figures in scoring six times in January.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE UNIVERSITY
The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe University marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
