BRONX - The Monroe College – Bronx Athletics Department is pleased to announce the hiring of Eric Mercado as the events and facilities manager.
"I am beyond grateful for this opportunity to join the Express Athletic Department," Mercado said. "Many thanks to President (Marc) Jerome, Express Director of Athletics Allaire Primiano, and all my terrific colleagues in New Rochelle. I'm excited to take on this role and represent the spirited dynamic of Monroe College Express Athletics."
Prior to joining the Express, Mercado served as an assistant coach for the Monroe College Mustangs men's basketball program during the 2022-23 season. He helped the program capture an East District Championship and earn a bid to the NJCAA Division I National Tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas.
Mercado worked with the Mustangs junior varsity program as well. The highlight of their 2022-23 season was a road victory against NJCAA Division III National Tournament qualifier Dutchess Community College.
"We are very happy to welcome Eric to our team as our events and facilities manager," Primiano said. "Eric will have a positive impact on our department in multiple ways, as we continue to enhance our daily athletic operations, internal and external facilities, as well as the game day experience."
No stranger to Region 15 athletics, Mercado also served as assistant men's basketball Coach at Westchester Community College. While serving as a coach for Westchester, he was able to recruit and coach four players to All-Region 15 accolades in two seasons.
Mercado was a Division I baseball player at Saint Peter's University in Jersey City, N.J. In the 2018 season, Mercado was statistically ranked as a top 100 player in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). Forever etched in Peacock lore, Mercado recorded the final out which ended the longest drought in Division I history.
While a part of Saint Peter's Athletics, Mercado was a special assistant to the athletic director for facilities & operations. He was an integral member of game-day operations for Saint Peter's, which would occasionally host local and regional televised events for ESPN and CBS Sports Network.
Prior to college, Mercado was a prolific high school athlete at nearby All Hallows High School from 2011-2015. Mercado played varsity baseball, basketball, and soccer. At the conclusion of his time there, he received the James E. Roepke and Jack Curran Awards for Baseball and Basketball Excellence, respectively. In addition, All Hallows won back-to-back CHSAA B Division Soccer Championships in 2013 and 2014.
A Bronx native, Mercado earned his bachelor's degree in sports management from Saint Peter's in 2019.
