Express Men's Soccer Continues Strong Play With Region 15 Win Over LaGuardia

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Monroe University – Bronx men's soccer team earned a convincing Region 15 victory over LaGuardia Community College, 7-0, at Flowers Park on Tuesday afternoon. The Express have now won four consecutive regional matches to boost their Region 15 record to 4-1 (4-2 overall). The Red Hawks drop to 2-4 both for the season and in the region.

Monroe scored two goals in the opening half and then poured it on with five more during the final 45 minutes of play.

"The guys played well and executed most of the chances we created," Express Head Coach Jose Hernandez said. "I'm happy with the improvement we're making in terms of team play and the aggressiveness that I want us to have during the 90 minutes of the game."

Jason Chunchi had a strong afternoon for the Express with a goal and three assists. Brando Tuba netted a pair of goals during the contest and now has five for the season.

Monroe's first successful offensive attack came just over seven minutes in as Juan Ramirez found the back of the net off his free kick from 25 yards out to give the Blue and Gold a 1-0 advantage. Over four minutes later, Chunchi rifled the ball towards the net, and it deflected in for a 2-0 Monroe benefit. That was the score after 45 minutes of action.

The Express upped its attacking game in the second half as Mamadou Top took a feed from Chunchi and launched it into the back of the cage from outside the box to extend his team's lead to 3-0 with 38:47 remaining in the contest. It was Top's sixth goal of the season. Just over four and a half minutes later, Top provided the helper for Tuba's first goal of the afternoon which made it 4-0 in favor of the home team. Tuba's next goal occurred just 1:05 later which was assisted by Chunchi.

Making his season debut for Monroe, Salim Anas gathered possession of the ball from inside the box and lined it into the net for his first tally as a member of the Express to pad the Blue and Gold's cushion to 6-0. Both Chunchi and Tuba were credited with the assists on the play.

Miguel Espinal concluded the scoring for Monroe with seven minutes left as he earned his first goal of his collegiate career which made it 7-0 in favor of the Express. Barka Siby was credited with his first collegiate assist. The Blue and Gold went on to earn the one-sided victory.

For the afternoon, Monroe outshot LaGuardia, 38-8, including 18-4 in shots on goal. Kimany Arzu made four saves to earn the shutout win for the Express.

"There's always a lot to improve, but we're on the right track, and it's always good for the boys to finish every chance we create on the pitch," Hernandez said.

For the Red Hawks, Abdoul Ouedraogo made seven saves. Christopher Nunez stopped four shots in relief.

Monroe – Bronx will continue Region 15 play on Thursday afternoon with a road matchup against Rockland Community College. The action at Rockland CC Soccer Field will begin at 4 p.m.
