BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Monroe University – Bronx men's soccer team earned a gritty Region 15 road victory on Saturday afternoon, defeating Borough of Manhattan Community College, 1-0, at Wave Field.
The decisive moment came in the 66th minute. After sustaining pressure from the Express,
Salim Anas slipped a pass through the middle to
Abdoulaye Sarr, who calmly finished to break the deadlock. It was Sarr's first goal of the season and stood as the match-winner.
"A hard-fought but well-deserved victory thanks to the team's persistent work during the 90 minutes," Express Head Coach
Jose Hernandez said. "BMCC is always a strong, physical team that fights hard until the very end."
Monroe (5-2, 5-1 Region 15) controlled much of the match, finishing with a 10-6 advantage in total shots and putting six on frame compared to BMCC's four. The Express tested the Panthers' goalkeeper throughout the afternoon, forcing him to make four saves. Anas,
Alejandro Aguilar, and
Kevin Chipantiza all produced strong chances, while
Miguel Espinal and
Brando Tuba threatened the defense with aggressive runs down the flanks.
The Blue and Gold also showed their composure defensively. Goalkeeper
Angel Grijalva made three stops, including a crucial save in the 79th minute when BMCC's Boubacar Barry unleashed a dangerous attempt on target. The back line, anchored by
Antonio Herrera,
Juan Lucero, and
Mamadou Top, kept the Panthers' attack in check during the late stages to preserve Grijalva's second shutout of the season.
"I'm very happy to be able to secure another away win and create so many chances once again against a top-level opponent," Hernandez said. "And I am also very proud of Abdoulaye who came on in the second half today and did a phenomenal job. I'm 100% sure that the boys will keep working hard to keep finalizing the chances we create."
Monroe drew several fouls from BMCC (3-3-1, 3-3-1 Region 15), helping them maintain control of possession in the midfield and slow down the Panthers' momentum.
With the win, the Express continues their strong start to Region 15 play and will look to build on the momentum when they return to Wave Field on Tuesday for another regional clash against Kingsborough Community College. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
