Monroe Express Women’s Basketball Comes up Short against No. 1 Hostos, 65-51

New Rochelle, N.Y., November 19, 2019 – The Monroe College Express women's basketball program suffered their first Region XV loss on Tuesday evening, falling to the No. 1 nationally ranked Hostos Community College, 65-51. The Express now stand at 3-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
 
"I am beyond impressed with composure and effort of this team under pressure against a really tough opponent." said Head Coach Jeremy Thompson. "The ability of this team to adapt to different situations and maintain the same level of energy shows the true character of these student athletes and the team as a whole."
 
The Express came out strong in the opening quarter, jumping out to a 7-3 lead under five minutes into the contest. Monroe closed out the period leading Hostos 11-10, holding the Caimans to 28.6 percent shooting in quarter.
 
In the second quarter, the Express boosted a five-point lead, 21-16, after a 10-6 run to start the quarter. The Caimans answered back after a slow start, closing out the half on a 10-1 run, to hold a 26-22 heading into the break.
 
Hostos took control of the game in the third quarter, leading by as much as 14-points in the frame. Four straight points from Monroe's Quanisha Griffin midway the quarter helped cut the Caimans lead to single-digits (48-35) with 2:37 left.
 
In the final period, Hostos extended their lead to 19 point at the 3:09 mark and held the Express to 19 percent shooting in the frame. Hostos closed out the game outscoring Monroe 18-14 in the quarter to secure a 65-51 victory.
 
Freshman Quanisha Griffin tallied a team-high 13 points, five rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Freshman Arianna Wilder added 10 points and two rebounds while sophomore Julie Trowers finished with nine points and a game-high 16 rebounds.
 
Freshman Barbara Valentin had eight points, four rebounds, three steals, and two assists. Freshman Desteny Arzu collected five points and a season-high six rebounds while Monae Laing added four points, five rebounds, and four steals
 
The Express women's basketball program returns to action next on Thursday, Nov. 21 on the road at the Borough of Manhattan Community College.

 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 30 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has 11 varsity and junior varsity teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
