New Rochelle, N.Y., November 21, 2019 – The Monroe College Express women's basketball team earned a bounce back win on Thursday night, defeating the Borough of Manhattan Community College on road, 85-63.
Freshman
Monae Laing paced the Express with her first double-double of the season of 18 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman
Quanisha Griffin scored in double-figures for the fifth consecutive game, finishing with a team-high 19 points, along with five rebounds, seven steals, and four assists. Freshman
Arianna Wilder netted a season-high 16 points, three rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Freshman
Ashley Molina registered a season-high 12 points, six rebounds, two assists, and three steals.
The Express used runs of 12-3 early in the first quarter and 12-7 late in the frame to jump out to a 24-10 lead after 10 minutes of play.
Monroe was hot to start the second quarter, hitting seven out of their first 10 shots to start the period. After holding BMCC to 31.58 percent shooting in the quarter, the Express carried a 20-point lead into halftime, 45-25.
Come the second-half, the Express saw its lead margin grow as high as 41 come the fourth quarter when
Monae Laing made a layup at the 6:37 mark of the fourth to put the Express up 82-41.
Defensively, Monroe held BMCC to 29.6 percent shooting and scored 34 points off 25 BMCC turnovers. The Express won the rebounding battle, outrebounding the Panthers 45-41.
Up next, Monroe remains on the road, traveling to SUNY Ulster County Community College on Sunday, Nov. 24 at 2:00 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 30 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has 11 varsity and junior varsity teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
