Stone Ridge, N.Y., November 24, 2019 – Behind highlight performances from the freshmen trio of
Arianna Wilder,
Quanisha Griffin, and
Barbara Valentin, the Monroe Express women's basketball program toppled SUNY Ulster on Sunday afternoon, 72-33.
Wilder recorded a game-high 22 points on eight-of-16 shooting, including five three-point fields goals. Griffin scored 13 points and nabbed a game-high 11 steals for her first double-double of the 2019-20 season. Valentin notched a double-double of her own, scoring 11 points and pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds.
Freshman
Desteny Arzu registered a near triple-double, tallying eight points, nine rebounds, and eight steals in the win.
Ashley Molina finished with eight points and eight rebounds while
Anya Shepard had six points and nine rebounds and
Mariame Gueye had four points and six rebounds.
The Express came out gunning straight from the tip, outscoring the Senators 20-8 in the opening period. In the second quarter, a 6-2 run by the Express gave the team a 16-point lead (26-10) midway through the period. Trailing with under five minutes remaining in the first half, Ulster sparked a huge 16-2 run to close out the half trailing Monroe, 26-20.
Using a 21-nothing run to start the third quarter, the Express built up a 22-point lead at 5:39 of the third quarter. Monroe closed out the frame on a 17-5 run to lead 59-25 heading into the fourth.
Monroe's defense stood tall in the final quarter, holding Ulster to only four made field goals and forced 11 turnover in the quarter.
The Express outrebounded the Senators 64-to-42 over the course of the game, in addition to holding Ulster to 28.2% shooting.
The Express women's basketball program returns home on Tuesday, Nov. 26 against Dutchess Community College.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 30 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has 11 varsity and junior varsity teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
