NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Monroe University – Bronx men's soccer team remained perfect in Region 15 play on Tuesday afternoon, cruising to a 9-1 victory over Bronx Community College at Flowers Park. With the win, the Express improve to 3-2-1 overall and 3-0-0 in regional play.
The Express wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, as Jeffrey Juca found the back of the net just 3:33 into the contest. Juca received a pass from Oumar Barry before finishing from inside the box to give Monroe an early 1-0 advantage.
Alanzo McGrath extended the lead during the 13th minute, scoring from the center of the box after receiving a pass from Maynor Palacios.
Juca struck again just over two minutes later, scoring on a rebound in the 15th minute to give the Blue and Gold a 3-0 advantage. Aliou Diallo was credited with the assist.
Bronx Community College (1-3-1, 1-3-1 Region 15) answered during the 21st minute when David Santa converted a free kick from 25 yards out, cutting the deficit to 3-1.
The Express responded quickly, with Diallo finding the back of the net in the 23rd minute. Palacios picked up his second assist of the afternoon on the play, as Monroe regained a three-goal advantage.
Cheikh Toure added to the Express' offensive outburst in the 36th minute, converting a penalty kick to make it a 5-1 contest heading into halftime.
Monroe continued its offensive pressure after the break, with Kadiff Wolfe scoring just 3:27 into the second half to push the Express' lead to 6-1.
Diallo added his second goal of the afternoon in the 53rd minute, finishing off a pass from Brandon Loyola. The goal marked Diallo's sixth of the season.
Toure also recorded his second tally of the afternoon during the 59th minute, scoring off a helper from Abdoulaye Sarr to give Monroe an 8-1 advantage.
Mamadou Bangoura capped off the scoring in the 69th minute, finding the back of the net for his first collegiate goal. Toure earned the assist on the play, giving him two goals and an assist during the afternoon.
The nine goals marked another strong offensive showing for the Express, who finished the afternoon with 32 shots, including 20 on goal. Monroe also earned 14 corner kicks while limiting Bronx Community College to just one total shot.
The Express' defense was equally impressive, holding the Broncos scoreless throughout the entire second half and recording a clean sheet over the final 45 minutes.
"Very strong performance from the team today," Express Head Coach Jose Hernandez said. "Scoring nine goals at home shows the quality and intensity we played with. I'm proud of the boys, but honestly, I'm disappointed we gave up that one goal because we held a very high standard defensively. We'll enjoy the win, but we know there's always room to improve."
For the Broncos, their goalkeeper Ramon Caldera made 11 saves during the contest.
Monroe will look to continue its strong Region 15 start when it returns to action against Queensborough Community College on Saturday, September 19. The match will begin at 11 a.m. at Queensborough Soccer Field.
"Now we turn the page and get ready for the next one on Saturday," Hernandez said.
