Beverly Williams Surpasses 1,000 Career Points to Help No. 6 Express Women's Basketball Defeat Dutchess

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The nationally ranked No. 6 Monroe University – Bronx women's basketball team got back in the win column on Tuesday evening by defeating Dutchess Community College in Region 15 play, 60-31, at Falcon Gymnasium. Thanks to the win, the Express (23-5, 12-1 Region 15) clinch the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Region 15 Tournament.

History was made during the contest as Beverly Williams eclipsed the 1,000-career point plateau. She becomes the first player in Express women's basketball history to accomplish this feat.

The historic moment occurred on the opening possession of the second half, when Beverly Williams received a pass from Jaeda Kelly and buried a 3-point basket from the corner for career points number 999, 1,000, and 1,001. 

Beverly Williams finished the evening with 17 points to now make it 1,003 in her illustrious career. She also notched five steals and four assists during the evening. Thanks to her five steals, she extends the program's record for most careers steals with 246.

"I'm happy to be the first person in program history to make 1,000 points and also lead in (career) steals," Beverly Williams said. "I hope there's more to come. I want to thank my teammates and coaches."

Also helping the Express during the contest was Salimah Williams who compiled seven points, 10 rebounds, eight steals, and four assists. Her four helpers put her at 250 for her career which strengthens her hold on the top spot on the program's all-time list. 

Aneyah McLamb notched 13 points, eight rebounds, and a trio of steals for Monroe. Jazmyne Rios netted eight points and secured five caroms. Sade Gibbs brought down nine rebounds of her own. Tyra Williams had seven boards. 

Beverly Williams got the Express started with a 3-point basket just eight seconds into the contest to open the scoring. Monroe had a 12-0 advantage after 10 minutes of play and never looked back. The Blue and Gold's strong defense held the Falcons (4-13, 3-10 Region 15) scoreless until 6:47 remaining in the second period when Katrina Carmel converted a layup.

Monroe led by as many as 42 before earning the 60-31 victory and the Region 15 Regular Season Championship. 

"Beverly Williams being the first Express women's basketball player to score 1,000 career points and having the most steals in team history is an unbelievable accomplishment for the program," Express Head Coach Damel Ling said. "Salimah Williams being the program's all-time assists leader is also an unbelievable accomplishment."

For the Express, Kelly and Lea Tavarez each racked up five rebounds during the game, with the former tallying three assists.

Monroe - Bronx will conclude the Region 15 portion of its regular season schedule against Suffolk County Community College on Saturday. Tipoff at Monroe Athletic Complex is set for 12 p.m. Prior to the game, seven Express players will be honored by Monroe University – Bronx during the Sophomore Day Ceremony. 

ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE UNIVERSITY
The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe University marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
