No. 6 Express Women's Basketball Honors Sophomores Before Earning Region 15 Win Over Suffolk County

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The nationally ranked No. 6 Monroe University – Bronx women's basketball team earned a 60-23 victory in Region 15 play over Suffolk County Community College, at Monroe Athletic Complex, on Saturday afternoon.

Monroe finishes the Region 15 regular season slate with a 13-1 record (24-4 overall) and will enter the upcoming regional tournament as the No. 1 seed. The Sharks (12-8, 7-7 Region 15) clinch a spot in the region's postseason with their official seeding to be announced.

The game took place on Sophomore Day as Monroe University – Bronx recognized Moryliz Marquez, Winter Smith, Aneyah McLamb, Diamondnique Stephenson, Salimah Williams, Beverly Williams, and the late Amira McCleod

Salimah Williams and Beverly Williams were honored with basketballs recognizing their milestones with the former delivering a program-record 250 assists so far with the Express and the latter registering over 1,000 points and forcing 246 steals in her career entering Saturday's game, both good for No. 1 in team history. Monroe also paid tribute to McCleod, who tragically passed away on November 22, by placing her jersey on a chair in center court. Her family, teammates, coaches, and friends joined in center court to honor her memory.

"We preach about being a family," Express Head Coach Damel Ling said. "When we say 'family' we really mean it. To have that many people here to support our young ladies was amazing."

Monroe led the contest from wire to wire and only gave up seven points in the first half. The Express scored 29 points off turnovers during the afternoon and led the game by as many as 40.

Leading the way for the Blue and Gold was McLamb who registered a triple-double with 14 points, 13 rebounds, and 10 steals.

Also helping the Express was Salimah Williams who registered 16 points, six rebounds, four steals, and three assists. Beverly Williams notched 15 points, five steals, and three rebounds. Tyra Williams and Jhency Pabon each produced five points with the former securing three boards. Jazmyne Rios and Sade Gibbs each added five caroms. Jaeda Kelly generated five points, four steals, and three rebounds. Diamondnique Stephenson provided four boards and a duo of assists. Lea Tavarez dished out three helpers.

Monroe – Bronx will close out the regular season with a non-region matchup against NJCAA Division II Westchester Community College on Friday evening. Tipoff at Monroe Athletic Complex is set for 6 p.m.
