NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Monroe University – Bronx baseball team earned a pair of convincing wins over Queensborough Community College in Region 15 play, 24-2 and 11-1, at Flowers Park on Sunday afternoon. The Express win the regular seasons series over the Tigers, 4-0, to begin regional play (4-9 in the overall season).
Monroe came storming out of the gate by scoring 11 runs in the opening inning of Game 1.
Christopher Marlin opened the offensive blitz by scorching a triple to left which sent
Pablo Aquino home from third. Other highlights in Monroe's productive inning were a two-run single by
Edwin Minaya Jr. and a two-run double off the bat of
Nomar Rodriguez.
The Express added 11 more runs in the bottom of the second to take complete control of the contest. The key plays during the stanza were an RBI double by
Nomar Rodriguez, an RBI single courtesy of
Juan Diaz, a two-run triple by
Robert Herrera, a run-scoring double off the bat of
Anthony Sanchez, an RBI triple by Minaya Jr., and a run-scoring base hit by Marlin.
The Tigers (0-4, 0-4 Region 15) scored their first run of the game in the top of the third. In the home half of the inning, Monroe responded by adding another tally thanks to an RBI single off the bat of Minaya Jr.

Queensborough scored its second run in the top of the fifth, but it was not enough as the Express clinched the opening game.
For Monroe at the plate, Marlin scored three runs, walked, and stole a base. Herrera scored twice, produced two hits, stole just as many bases, and earned a base on balls. Sanchez went 2-for-3 with two doubles, three runs scored, a walk, and a stolen base. Minaya Jr. had three hits in just as many at-bats, drove in four runs, and earned a walk.
Also helping the Express in the lineup was
Giovanny Flores who singled, crossed home plate twice, walked, and stole two bags.
Nomar Rodriguez scored twice and drove in four runs. Aquino scored four times, singled, stole three bases, and walked.
Elijah Andino produced a base hit and came around to score.
Yan Ortiz Torres crossed home plate twice, earned a walk just as many times, and stole a base. Diaz scored twice, had two RBIs, and stole a bag.
Jesus Guerrero produced a single.
On the mound,
Brylyn Mateo gave up just one earned run and struck out four batters in five innings pitched to earn the complete-game victory for the Express.
In Game 2, Monroe put up a four-spot in the bottom of the first, highlighted by an RBI double from Ortiz Torres.
In the home half of the third, a run-scoring single by both Andino and
Abraham Joaquin Taveras padded the Express' cushion to 6-0.
After Monroe scored three more runs in the bottom of the fourth, Queensborough scored its first run of the game in the top of the fifth. The Express countered with a run of their own in the bottom frame.
In the bottom of the sixth, Joaquin Torres stepped up to the plate with one out and a runner on third. He launched the ball to center field. It was caught but it was hit far enough for
Yadiel Santana to score from third and clinch the sweep for Monroe – Bronx.
Marcus Rodriguez had an outstanding showing on the mound for the Express as he pitched five innings of no-hit ball and gave up no earned runs, while striking out seven batters in the process, to earn the first win of his collegiate career.
Justin Martinez struck out three batters in a full inning out of the bullpen.
At the plate for Monroe, Herrera went 3-for-4 including two doubles, while scoring three runs and stealing a base. Nunez went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, one walk, and a stolen base. Andino stole a base and crossed home plate. Santana singled, walked, and stole a trio of bases. Joaquin Taveras worked two walks. Ortiz Torres doubled and tripled. He crossed home plate a pair of times. Sanchez added an RBI.
Monroe – Bronx will host Borough of Manhattan Community College in a Region 15 game on Tuesday. The game will take place at Padavan-Preller Field in Bellerose, N.Y. with an updated start time of 3:00 p.m.
