THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The nationally ranked No. 12 Monroe University – Bronx women's basketball team earned a convincing victory over Bryant & Stratton College – Syracuse, 77-61, at Monsignor Scanlan Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman
Beverly Williams had a career game for the Express (15-9) with 34 points, on 8-for-17 shooting from the floor and 6-for-12 from 3-point range, while grabbing six rebounds, dishing out four assists, and forcing a pair of steals. "Bev Williams had a great game offensively," Express Head Coach
Damel Ling said. "We did a great job of setting screens and getting open and she did an unbelievable job finishing today."
Also helping Monroe was freshman
Winter Smith who provided 15 points, eight assists, five rebounds, and three steals. Sophomore
Tymere Moorer came off the bench and scored eight points, snatched four boards, dished out two assists, and compiled just as many steals.
"We came out tonight with a renewed focus,"' Ling said. "We were committed to playing team defense and that defensive support created a lot of offensive opportunities for us. After a rough loss the other night, we did a good job of playing together, which is a good sign for us moving forward."
The Bobcats (3-9) got off to a good start during the contest by taking a 15-14 edge after 10 minutes of play. However, Williams drained a triple 20 seconds into the second stanza to give Monroe the lead for good. Later in the quarter, the Express held a 24-22 benefit with 3:29 to go before the break. That's when Monroe took over by finishing the final 3:17 of the half with a 12-0 run to take a commanding 36-24 advantage into the intermission. Moorer began that first-half closing rally with a 3-point shot and Smith capped it off with a triple of her own with 1:06 left. With 5:35 to play in the third quarter, freshman
Amira McCleod drained two free throws to give Monroe its largest lead of the game at 53-27 on its way to the 77-61 victory.
For the Bobcats, sophomore Destiny Perry scored 25 points, grabbed seven rebounds, delivered four assists, and recorded four steals. Junior Eunice Long had a monster double-double with 19 points and 20 rebounds, while collecting five steals.
