No. 12 Express Women's Basketball Routes Dutchess in Region 15 Play

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The nationally ranked No. 12 Monroe University – Bronx women's basketball team earned a convicting victory in Region 15 play over Dutchess Community College, 95-51, at Monroe Athletic Complex on Tuesday evening.

The Express (16-9, 6-4 Region 15) clinch a home playoff game in the upcoming Region 15 Tournament which will begin on Tuesday, February 25. 

Dutchess (2-13, 1-10 Region 15) scored the first two points of the game but then Monroe went on an 11-1 run, capped off by a layup from sophomore Makira Bunsie, to take the lead for good at 11-3 with 5:31 left in the first quarter. In the fourth period, a layup by freshman Salimah Williams gave the Express their largest lead of the evening at 89-41 on their way to the 95-51 win. 

During the evening, Monroe shot 47.1% (41-for-87) from the field and forced 46 turnovers. The Express scored 57 points from those Falcons' miscues.

Six players from Monroe – Bronx reached double figures in scoring. 

Sophomore Tymere Moorer led the way for the Express by scoring 23 points off the bench, while forcing eight steals, dishing out five assists, and snatching three rebounds. Bunsie added 16 points, four boards, and a duo of steals. Freshman Winter Smith compiled 14 points, seven caroms, a trio of steals, and a pair of assists. Classmate Beverly Williams added 13 points, four helpers, and just as many steals. 

Salimah Williams and sophomore Jah Gunter each scored 10 points for Monroe, with the former recording six rebounds and just as many assists to go along with two steals and the latter providing five rebounds and two helpers. Sophomore Tiffany Newsome grabbed seven boards, delivered three assists, and forced two steals.

For the Falcons, freshman Eva Bertiz had a double-double with 28 points and 11 rebounds, while forcing four steals, dishing out two assists, and blocking two shots.

It will be a quick turnaround for the Express as they will travel to Upstate New York on Wednesday for a clash with Herkimer College. Tipoff at Varsity Gymnasium is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.

The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe University marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
