SELDEN, N.Y. – The nationally ranked No. 12 Monroe University – Bronx women's basketball team earned a convincing victory in Region 15 play over Suffolk County Community College, 51-24, at Brookhaven Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
The Express (18-9, 7-4 Region 15) officially clinch the third seed and a home first-round game in the upcoming Region 15 Tournament. The Sharks will also compete in the regional postseason but drop to 7-11 overall and 3-9 in the region. They are currently the fifth seed.
Monroe - Bronx led the game from wire to wire, jumping out to an 8-0 lead and never looking back.
"We came out and established ourselves on the defensive end from the start," Express Head Coach
Damel Ling said. "
Diamondnique Stephenson gave us a tremendous boost off the bench, and it was the second game in a row that
Da'Mya Cheatham was a presence up front."
Sophomore
Tiffany Newsome had a strong game with 13 points, eight rebounds, and seven steals for the Express. Freshman
Beverly Williams notched 11 points, three boards, and a trio of assists. Rookie
Winter Smith tallied four points, a game-high eight steals, five assists, and four caroms. Cheatham netted four points and gathered five rebounds. Sophomore
Tymere Moorer generated six points, two rebounds, and a pair of steals.
For the Sharks, rookie Alyssa D'Abbraccio scored 13 points and clutched five rebounds. Freshman Aryanna Zito tallied seven points, four boards, and just as many steals. Sophomore Sanderlee Thervil gathered eight rebounds, while freshman Megan Popielaski snatched six. Rookie Aysia Francis added five rebounds and three assists.
Monroe – Bronx will conclude the regular season with a Region 15 matchup against Nassau Community College on Tuesday. Tipoff at Monsignor Scanlan Gym is at 6:00 p.m. It's Sophomore Night as Monroe University – Bronx will celebrate the Express women's basketball honorees with a ceremony prior to the start of the game.
"We are looking to end the regular season on a good note on Sophomore Night," Ling said.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE UNIVERSITY
The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe University marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
