Tiffany Newsome Ties Program Single-Game Rebounding Record During No. 12 Express Women's Basketball Team's Region 15 Win Over Nassau

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The nationally ranked No. 12 Monroe University – Bronx women's basketball team concluded the 2024-25 regular season in grand fashion by defeating Nassau Community College, 76-50, at Monsignor Scanlan Gymnasium on Tuesday evening.

The Express (19-9, 8-4 Region 15) clinch the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Region 15 Tournament and will host sixth-seeded Suffolk County Community College on Tuesday, February 25, at Monroe Athletic Complex. The start time will be announced later this week.

History was made during Monroe's win over Nassau (9-7, 5-7 Region 15) as sophomore Tiffany Newsome tied a program single-game record with 24 rebounds. She joins Maria Negron who snatched 24 boards during Monroe's win at Nassau on February 8, 2022. Newsome also scored 17 points and forced six steals against the Lions on Tuesday night. This is all despite Newsome only playing 22 minutes.

Freshman Beverly Williams had a big game for the Express with 30 points, eight rebounds, and five assists. Sophomore Makira Bunsie tallied a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, while gathering three steals. Classmate Da'Mya Cheatham had a near double-double with eight points and nine caroms, while dishing out two assists. Second-year player Davian Myers added eight rebounds and two helpers.

Monroe – Bronx put its stamp on the game early by going on a 14-0 run to take a commanding 16-2 lead. A 3-point field goal by Williams gave Monroe a 23-3 hold with 3:12 remaining in the opening period. In the early stages of the fourth quarter, a layup by Cheatham equaled Monroe's largest lead of the evening, at 66-34, on its way to the 76-50 victory.

"We came out with a lot of energy," Express Head Coach Damel Ling said. "We did a really good job of channeling the emotions of Sophomore Night into a good start. Tiffany Newsome was a menace on the boards and that created a lot of opportunities for us. Bev Williams once again proved she is one of the best guards in the region."

For Nassau, freshman Kirina Azemar led the way a game-high 41 points to go along with nine rebounds and four steals. Sophomore Janatta Bartley grabbed 21 boards, blocked six shots, and scored six points. Classmate Nykia Robinson generated 11 caroms and four steals.

It was Sophomore Night as Monroe University celebrated its seven honorees – Cheyenne Hoxie, Bunsie, Cheatham, Jah Gunter, Tymere Moorer, Newsome, and Myers – with a ceremony prior to the game.

"We did a lot of good things, but now it's time to lock in and prepare for the region playoffs," Ling said. "If we continue to get contributions from most of our roster, we like our chances."
