BRONX – The Monroe University – Bronx men's basketball team earned a convincing Region 15 victory over local rival Bronx Community College, 93-67, at Alumni Gymnasium on Thursday evening.
The Express have now won three games in a row to advance their regional record to 6-2 (7-3 overall).
Monroe shot 50.7% (36-for-71) from the field during the evening.
"We competed with intensity and attention to detail that was needed," Express Head Coach
Chris Neely said. "Proud of our guys' effort and attitude tonight."
Leading the way for Monroe was
Jalonie Pittman who tied a game-high with 16 points, while grabbing eight rebounds, dishing out three assists, and forcing a pair of steals.
Josmar Acevedo also had 16 points as he came off the bench. He delivered three helpers and snatched two boards
Monroe led from wire to wire. The game got out of hand early as a 3-point field goal by Acevedo gave the Express a 19-5 hold, just 8:57 into the contest.
The Broncos (0-9, 0-8 Region 15) managed to pull to within eight (28-20) with 5:03 to go in the opening half. However, Monroe outscored the opposition by a 13-5 margin during the remainder of the first period and went into the intermission up 41-25.
The Express built their lead to as many as 37 in the second half on their way to the 93-67 regional win.
For Monroe during the evening,
Adrian Rosario compiled 10 points, eight rebounds, and a trio of blocks.
Steven McGriff also had 10 points to go along with four rebounds and a duo of blocks.
Paolo Avvento generated seven points, four caroms, just as many assists, and three steals.
Javaughn White grabbed eight rebounds.
Andi Metaliaj provided six points, four rebounds, and just as many assists.
Michael Samuda chipped in with six boards and five assists.
Damien Maldonado and
Caleb Dunn each scored six points with the former adding three rebounds, a trio of steals, and two assists.
Monroe will continue Region 15 play on Sunday by hosting Kingsborough Community College. Tipoff at Monroe Athletic Complex is scheduled for 3 p.m.
