Express Men's Basketball Extends Winning Streak to Four With Region 15 Victory Over Kingsborough

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Monroe University – Bronx men's basketball team continued its winning ways on Sunday afternoon by defeating region-rival Kingsborough Community College, 90-49, at Monroe Athletic Complex.

The Express extend their regional and overall winning streaks to four games and are now 7-2 in the region (8-3 overall).

Monroe's defense forced 31 turnovers and scored 40 points off the opposition's miscues during the afternoon.

"We were locked in defensively," Express Head Coach Chris Neely said. "We knew we had to come out and play good defense. We moved the ball and shot the 3-pointers well today. We were able to be mature and be consistent in what we needed to do."

Leading the way for the Express was Jalonie Pittman who produced 12 points, three rebounds, just as many assists, and two steals. Josmar Acevedo came off the bench and delivered 12 points, four boards, and three steals. Steven McGriff generated 10 points, four caroms, and four steals. Michael Samuda had a game-high 10 assists, while grabbing eight rebounds and gathering three steals.

Kingsborough (2-10, 2-8 Region 15) jumped out to an 8-4 lead early in the contest. However, a steal and a fastbreak layup from Samuda sparked a 9-0 run for the Blue and Gold, capped off by a layup from Andi Metaliaj, to give the home team a 13-8 advantage less than five minutes into the contest.

Monroe stayed in front for the remainder of the game. With 26 seconds left in the first half, Samuda executed a successful jump shot to build the Express' cushion to 52-22 and that was the score after 20 minutes of play.

In the second half, Monroe managed to build its lead up to 49 before earning the 90-49 victory.

Helping the Express during the afternoon was Metaliaj who tied a game-high with eight rebounds, while tallying six points and two assists. Malike Smart scored nine points with two boards off the bench. Adrian Rosario notched seven points and four caroms. Nehemiah McCallop scored six points and snatched five rebounds, while Paolo Avvento netted seven points, clutched two caroms, and forced two steals. Damien Maldonado chipped in with six points and two steals. Caleb Dunn tied a game high with four steals to go along with four points, while Ramsey Lewis also scored four points and collected two steals. Javaughn White snatched four boards and Moustapha Sarr delivered two assists.

Monroe will conclude the first half of Region 15 play on Saturday against SUNY Sullivan. Tipoff at Monsignor Scanlan Gymnasium is set for 1 p.m.
