Monroe University Mourns Loss of Express Women's Basketball Standout Amira McCleod

We are deeply heartbroken by the tragic loss of Amira McCleod, a treasured member of the Express women's basketball team, who passed away last Saturday evening.

Amira was tragically struck by gunfire while attending an off-campus gathering in Long Island, an innocent bystander caught in a senseless and devastating incident.

"We are heartbroken by the loss of Amira," said Director of Athletics David Spiegel. "Amira was not only a standout student-athlete but also a vibrant, uplifting presence within our team and community. Her energy, kindness, and infectious smile will be deeply missed. Our thoughts and condolences are with her family, friends, teammates, and all who had the privilege of knowing her during this incredibly difficult time."

Amira, a sophomore starter, joined the team in September 2024 and quickly became a beloved member of the Express women's basketball program. She was known for her dedication, her passion for the game, and the joy she brought to every practice and game.

"Amira was the heart of our team for the past two seasons," said Women's Basketball Head Coach Damel Ling. "Her commitment, work ethic, and positivity were truly unmatched. Her presence was a constant source of inspiration, and we will miss her every day."

In response to this heartbreaking loss, President Jerome met privately with the women's basketball team this past Monday morning to offer support and guidance during their time of grief. The team, showing incredible strength and unity, decided to honor Amira's memory by playing last night's game in her name. Afterward, they gathered for a candlelight vigil to reflect, remember, and celebrate the life of their beloved teammate.

On behalf of the entire Express athletic community, we extend our deepest sympathies to Amira's family, friends, and teammates.

During this unimaginably difficult time, we stand together in remembrance and support, united by the lasting impact Amira had on all of us.
