Express Men's Soccer Falls to NJCAA Division II Essex County

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Monroe University – Bronx men's soccer team dropped its non-region match to NJCAA Division II powerhouse Essex County College, 4-1, at Flowers Park on Tuesday afternoon.

Salim Anas tallied Monroe's lone goal for the afternoon as he scored in the 86th minute to cut Monroe's deficit to 4-1 but it was not enough as the Wolverines (6-2-0) earned the victory. 

Kristijan Penic tallied two goals during the afternoon for Essex County, including the match-opening goal less than two minutes into the contest.  He also provided the assist on the official match-winning tally by Marques McDonald that made it 2-0 during the 39th minute. 

For the afternoon, Monroe (6-3-0) was outshot by Essex County, 27-8.

Angel Grijalva made six saves for the Express in relief. Schneider Barron made three saves as the starting goalkeeper to earn the win for the Wolverines. 

Monroe will return to Region 15 play on Thursday for a matchup against Rockland Community College. The action at Rockland Soccer Field will begin at 4:00 p.m.

The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe University marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
