No. 13 Express Women's Basketball Tops Bronx CC in Region 15 Play

BRONX – The nationally ranked No. 13 Monroe University – Bronx women's basketball team earned a convincing Region 15 victory over Bronx Community College, 85-27, at Alumni Gymnasium on Tuesday evening.

Monroe (13-8, 5-3 Region 15) outscored Bronx CC, 25-0, during the opening quarter. The Express extended their lead to 28-0, on a 3-point field goal by sophomore Cheyenne Hoxie, before the Broncos (4-11, 2-8 Region 15) finally scored their first two points of the contest 2:20 into the second quarter.

Monroe's strong defense forced Bronx CC to commit 51 turnovers during the evening. The Blue and Gold held the opposition to just 29.0% shooting from the field. The Express won the rebounding battle, 47-22.

"We came out with the mindset of not losing tonight," Express Head Coach Damel Ling said. "We have lost some close games lately. We wanted to come out, establish ourselves defensively, and get everyone involved offensively. I think we did a good job of that. This is the time of year you want to start putting things together, and tonight was a good sign of that."

Leading the way for the Express was freshman Beverly Williams who scored a game-high 24 points, forced eight steals, and dished out three assists. Sophomore Makira Bunsie netted 11 points, snatched seven caroms, and registered a duo of steals. Rookie Winter Smith tallied four points, eight steals, seven assists, and two boards.

Also helping Monroe was freshman Salimah Williams who scored 13 points, grabbed six rebounds, distributed five assists, and recorded four steals off the bench. Sophomore Tymere Moorer also reached double figures in scoring off the bench with 11 points, while dishing out four assists, forcing three steals, and clutching two caroms. Freshman Diamondnique Stephenson brought downs seven rebounds, while sophomore Tiffany Newsome provided four points, seven rebounds, six steals, and a trio of assists.

The Express will battle the LaGuardia Community College Club team on Thursday evening. Tipoff at LaGuardia CC Sports Gymnasium is set for 5:00 p.m.
