LONG ISLAND CITY, N.Y. – The nationally ranked No. 13 Monroe University – Bronx women's basketball team dominated the LaGuardia Community College Club team, securing a 79-43 victory at LaGuardia CC Gymnasium on Thursday evening.
Monroe (14-8) got off to a strong start, outscoring LaGuardia 19-8 in the first quarter. The Express extended their lead to 27-8 after layups by sophomore Tiffany Newsome, classmate Tymere Moorer, freshman Beverly Williams, and sophomore Davian Myers before the Red Hawks (6-10) managed their first points of the second quarter at the 7:10 mark.
The Express were relentless on the boards, collecting 36 rebounds as a team during thee evening. Monroe's strong defense limited LaGuardia to 32.6% shooting from the field. Monroe also shared the ball well, winning the assists battle 23-6.
"We got off to a slow start, but we picked it up as the game went on," Express Head Coach Damel Ling said.
Leading the charge for Monroe was Williams, who delivered an all-around performance with 20 points, eight steals, and four assists. "I think the last two games, Bev Williams is finding her rhythm offensively," Ling said. "Our bench got valuable minutes that will be beneficial as we start this stretch run."
Sophomore Jah Gunter contributed with five points and eight rebounds, while freshman Winter Smith added four points, seven steals, eight assists, and two rebounds.
Providing a spark off the bench, Newsome chipped in with 11 points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Sophomore Makira Bunsie also reached double figures with 11 points and four rebounds, while Moorer pulled down six rebounds. Sophomore Cheyenne Hoxie knocked down nine points with three 3-pointers.
With this victory, the No. 13 Express look to carry their momentum forward as they prepare for their next matchup on Thursday, February 6, against Region 15 rival and nationally ranked No. 6 Kingsborough Community College. Tipoff at Monroe Athletic Complex is set for 6:00 p.m.
