ACCORD, N.Y. – The Monroe University – Bronx men's soccer team earned a triumphant Region 15 victory on the road over nationally ranked No. 6 Ulster County Community College, 3-1, at Rondout Valley Soccer Field on Saturday evening. The Express bump their record to 3-0 overall and in the region, while the Senators drop to 3-1 for the year and in Region 15 play.
"A super intense match but very well played by the team in general," Express Head Men's Soccer Coach
Jose Hernandez said. "We went to Ulster knowing that we had to have possession of the ball and win the midfield to be able to come out with a victory today and that is exactly what we did."
All four goals scored in the match came in the opening half. The Express struck first 10 minutes into the contest as sophomore forward
Chrismonor Eugene took a feed from rookie midfielder
Xcaret Gonzalez to give the Express a 1-0 advantage. Four minutes later, sophomore defender
Clermens Devariste found first-year defender
Jonathan Lima who found the back of the net for the official match-winning tally, and his fourth goal of the season, to extend the Blue and Gold's advantage to 2-0.
With four minutes left to play in the first half, freshman defender
Antonio Herrera tallied his first goal of his collegiate career to inflate Monroe's cushion to 3-0. Rookie midfielder
Juan Ramirez was credited with the assist on the goal.
Ulster County got on the board during the final minute of the opening half to pull to within two.
The defense by both teams stepped up in the second half, not allowing a goal during the final 45 minutes of play, as Monroe went on to earn the key Region 15 victory over a nationally ranked opponent on the road.
Rookie goalkeeper
Raymond Romero made two saves in net to get the win for Monroe. The Express had the advantage in both shots (16-8) and shots on target (10-3).
"The work throughout the week was fundamental for this outstanding performance by the team," Hernandez said. "Scoring three goals in the first half shows that the boys came out hungry and wanting to win the match with attitude and good style play.
Monroe – Bronx will continue Region 15 action on Tuesday evening against Bronx Community College. The action at Flowers Park will begin at 7:30 p.m.
