Big First Half Leads Express Men's Soccer to Dominating Region 15 Victory Over Orange County

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Monroe University – Bronx men's soccer team earned another Region 15 victory on Tuesday, this time defeating Orange County Community College by a score of 8-4, at Flowers Park.

The Express bump their overall and regional record to 2-0, while the Colts fall to 0-2 for the season and in Region 15 play.

Leading the way for Monroe – Bronx were a pair of rookies, midfielder Juan Ramirez and defender Jonathan Lima, who each scored three goals to help pace the Express' attack. Ramirez now has four goals in two matches this year.

Monroe – Bronx scored the first eight goals of the contest, with seven of them occurring in the opening half. Orange County scored the final four goals of the match, all during the final 27:57 of regulation.

"In the first half, we did a fantastic job by demonstrating everything we had worked on in previous days," Express Head Coach Jose Hernandez said. "Tomorrow, we will begin to prepare for a tough matchup on Saturday (at nationally ranked No. 6 Ulster County Community College)."

Ramirez notched the match's first goal for the Express during the fifth minute off a feed by sophomore defender Christian Trujillo. Exactly five minutes later, he scored again as he received a pass from freshman defender Antonio Herrera and found the back of the net to put the Blue and Gold up 2-0. After Lima scored the next two goals, Ramirez's third goal of the match in the 32nd minute ended up being the official match winner.

Before the first half concluded, Lima buried his third goal of the afternoon (42nd minute) after sophomore forward Chrismonor Eugene drilled the ball into the back of the cage (36th minute).

In the second half, freshman midfielder Kevin Chipantiza fed the ball to rookie defender Soumana Konate who lined the ball past the opposing goalkeeper and into the net to extend Monroe's cushion to 8-0 with 33:43 left to go.

Orange County turned the momentum into its favor by scoring four unanswered goals, including two by freshman midfielder Nickolas Ivanov, to slice the deficit in half. However, the Express' defense recovered and shut down the opposition during the final 9:55 of the contest to win their second regional contest of the season.

For the afternoon, Eugene tallied an assist to go along with his goal. Trujillo produced a pair of helpers. Sophomore midfielder Veron Owusu Ansah added an assist of his own. In net, freshman goalkeeper Dwayne Brown did not allow a goal in 45 minutes of play to earn the win. Classmate Angel Grijalva made two saves in net for Monroe during the second half.

For Orange County, rookie goalkeeper Ebani Rugerio made 12 saves.

The Express had the heavy advantage in shots during the day, 42-7, and in corner kicks, 7-3.

Monroe - Bronx will battle nationally ranked No. 6 Ulster County Community College, in a Region 15 match, on Saturday evening. The action at Rondout Valley Soccer Field, in Accord, N.Y., will begin at 6:00 p.m.
