WEST HARRISON, N.Y. – The Monroe College – Bronx baseball team dropped a game to NJCAA Division II Westchester Community College, 26-6, at Silver Lake Park on Friday afternoon.
The Express (6-14) fell behind 5-0 after just one inning of play. The Blue and Gold got one run back in the second but then the Vikings (12-10) added four runs in the bottom frame and then three more in the third.
Monroe – Bronx scored three runs in the top of the fifth thanks to a two-run double off the bat of freshman right fielder
Alfredo Jimenez Jr. and an RBI single by rookie second baseman
Jeanpaul Alicea Albertorio. The Express added two more runs in the top of the seventh, highlighted by an RBI single off the bat of freshman third baseman
Jesus Guerrero, but it was not enough as the Vikings went on to earn the victory.
Leading the way for the Express at the plate was Jimenez Jr. who produced two hits and scored a run. Guerrero also had two hits, including a double. Sophomore center fielder
Bryant Quezada went 2-for-3 and scored a run. Second-year catcher
Hecxiel Perez produced a single and scored. Sophomore infielder
Didier Hernandez reached base with a walk and came around to score. Rookie shortstop
Yan Ortiz Torres singled, scored, drove in a run, and stole a base. Alicea Albertorio stole a base and crossed home plate. Freshman catcher
Yadiel Santana produced a hit, while sophomore first baseman
Camilo Rodriguez singled and picked up an RBI.
For Westchester, sophomore pitcher Josh Rosario earned the win on the mound as he struck out six batters and gave up just one earned run in six innings pitched.
Monroe – Bronx and Westchester will battle again on Saturday, in a doubleheader, at Mercy University Baseball Field. First pitch is set for noon.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
