BRONX – The Monroe College – Bronx baseball team earned two Region 15 wins over Borough of Manhattan Community College, 18-1 and 12-2, at Padavan-Preller Field on Sunday afternoon. The Express are now 6-1 in regional play (8-14 overall). Monroe earns the four-game series sweep over Borough of Manhattan (2-8, 2-8 Region 15).
The Express came storming out of the gate in game one by scoring 10 runs in the opening inning. Freshman third baseman
Giovanny Flores highlighted Monroe's big inning by driving in two runs on a single. First-year shortstop
Yan Ortiz Torres followed with a run-scoring hit. Freshman designated hitter
Jesus Guerrero also chipped in during Monroe's productive opening frame by driving in two runs on a single. Rookie right fielder
Alfredo Jimenez Jr., sophomore left fielder
Gregory Espinal, and second-year catcher
Hecxiel Perez each produced an RBI hit.
In the bottom of the third, Perez drilled a three-run homer to left field to extend Monroe's lead to 13-1. Later in the frame, after Monroe scored another run, sophomore center fielder
Bryant Quezada drove in two runs on a single to center to pad the Express' benefit to 16-1.
In the home half of the fourth, Ortiz Torres and rookie pinch hitter
Jeremy Columna each drew a walk with the bases loaded to extend Monroe's lead to 18-1. Monroe ended up securing the victory by that score.
On the mound for Monroe, freshman pitcher
Jayden Moya earned his second consecutive complete-game victory as he struck out 12 batters, gave up just one earned run, and didn't walk anybody in five innings pitched.
At the plate for the Express, Espinal went 2-for-2 with three runs scored, just as many stolen bases, and a walk. Guerrero went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and a stolen base. Ortiz Torres scored twice, worked two walks, and stole a base. Freshman second baseman
Jeanpaul Alicea Albertorio stole a pair of bases, scored a run, and earned a base on balls. Flores stole three bases and scored. Jimenez Jr. stole four bases, scored three runs, and earned a pair of walks. Perez scored three runs and reached base via a walk. Freshman first baseman
Camilo Rodriguez picked up an RBI and crossed home plate. Quezada stole a pair of bases, drew a walk, and scored. Freshman center fielder
Antwon Beverly scored a run.
In game two, the Express produced four runs in the opening inning, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of freshman designated hitter
Elio Sanchez and a run-scoring single by Rodriguez, to take a 4-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the third, an RBI double by Flores propelled the Express to a two-run inning which gave Monroe a 6-0 advantage.
BMCC scored two runs in the top of the fifth to shrink the Blue and Gold's lead to 6-2.
The Express' bats broke through in the bottom of the fifth, scoring six runs to clinch the mercy-rule victory. During the productive frame, Jimenez Jr. and Espinal each produced RBI singles to get Monroe to double digits in runs scored. And then, Rodriguez ended the game by launching a single to drive in Espinal to clinch the Region 15 sweep for the Express.
On the mound, freshman pitcher
Jacob Cotto earned a complete-game victory for the Express as he struck out eight batters and gave up just two earned runs in five innings pitched.
At the plate for Monroe, Espinal and Rodriguez each went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, with the former stealing two bases and the latter stealing one base. Flores scored a pair of runs, drew two walks, and stole a base. Freshman catcher
Yadiel Santana scored two runs, drew a walk, and picked up a stolen base. Sanchez scored and added a stolen base. Beverly walked, stole a base, and came around to score. Freshman second baseman
Joeliel Cruz picked up an RBI. Jimenez Jr. stole a pair of bases, drew a walk, and scored. Ortiz Torres crossed home plate.
Monroe – Bronx will host nationally ranked No. 14 Suffolk County Community College in a Region 15 contest on Tuesday afternoon. First pitch at Roberto Clemente State Park is set for 4:00 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
