BRONX – The Monroe College – Bronx baseball team earned another Region 15 victory over Bronx Community College, 12-2, at Ohio Field on Friday afternoon. The Express have won four consecutive regional games to bump their Region 15 record to 13-5 (16-19 overall).
Sophomore pitcher
Didier Hernandez had an outstanding game for the Express as he earned a complete-game victory by striking out 12 batters and giving up just one earned run on four hits in eight innings pitched. He is now 3-1 this season.
The Express' bats broke out right away, scoring two runs in the top of the first. Freshman third baseman
Giovanny Flores drove in those two runs with a single.
Monroe – Bronx added four runs in the second, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of freshman shortstop
Yan Ortiz Torres, to inflate the Blue and Gold's benefit to 6-0.
In the top of the third, freshman designated hitter
Edwin Minaya Jr. drove in sophomore first baseman
Camilo Rodriguez from second with an RBI double to extend the Express' lead to 7-0. Then, he came around to score on an RBI single off the bat of rookie right fielder
Alfredo Jimenez Jr. On the same play, Jimenez Jr. came all the way around to score thanks to a fielding error in right to make it 9-0 in favor of Monroe. Later in the frame, Ortiz Torres hit a sacrifice fly to right which scored rookie second baseman
Joeliel Cruz from to third to put Monroe up by double digits.
The Broncos (8-17, 6-12 Region 15) scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to pull to within eight.
In the top of the seventh, Cruz drilled an RBI triple which scored Minaya Jr. for Monroe's 11th run. The Express added one more run in the top of the eighth.
In the bottom of the eighth, Hernandez retired the side in order, which included striking out the final two batters looking, to clinch the Region 15 victory for Monroe – Bronx.
At the plate for the Express, Minaya Jr. went 2-for-3. Cruz also went 2-for-3 as he stole two bases, scored a pair of runs, and drew a walk. Freshman left fielder
Jeanpaul Alicea Albertorio drilled a double, drove in a run, scored twice, earned a base on balls, and stole a base. Ortiz Torres scored twice, stole just as many bases, and drew a walk. Flores produced two hits, while sophomore catcher
Hecxiel Perez reached base with a single. Rodriguez doubled and walked. Jimenez Jr. earned a base on balls and stole a base.
Monroe – Bronx will close out its four-game series with Bronx CC on Saturday afternoon as both teams will play each other in a Region 15 doubleheader. First pitch at Ohio Field is set for 12:00 p.m. The Express will be the official home team for both contests.

The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I).
