Strong Bats Propel Express Baseball to Pair of Region 15 Wins Over Bronx CC

BRONX – The Monroe College – Bronx baseball team earned two Region 15 victories over Bronx Community College, 17-8 and 15-6, at Ohio Field on Saturday afternoon. The Express won all four games of their regular season series with the Broncos and bump their regional record to 15-5 (18-19 overall). Bronx CC falls to 8-19 overall and 6-14 in the region. Monroe – Bronx was the official home team for both games on Saturday. 
 
In game one, the Express scored four runs in the bottom of the second to take a 4-0 advantage. During the frame, sophomore first baseman Camilo Rodriguez drilled an RBI single to open the scoring, followed by a two-run single courtesy of freshman second baseman Joeliel Cruz to extend the Blue and Gold's lead to three runs. Second-year center fielder Bryant Quezada put a cap on the inning by drilling an RBI single to center. 
 
Monroe – Bronx had an even more productive third inning, scoring five runs to extend its hold to 9-0. Rodriguez once again opened the scoring in the frame with an RBI single. Other highlights during Monroe's big inning were a walk with the bases loaded by sophomore designated hitter Gregory Espinal and an RBI single courtesy of freshman third baseman Giovanny Flores, with the latter putting the Express up by nine. 
 
The Broncos did not go down quietly as they pushed across five runs in the fourth to pull to within four.
 
The Express tilted momentum back into their favor by scoring two runs in the bottom of the fourth, capped off by a sacrifice fly to right from freshman right fielder Alfredo Jimenez Jr. to pad their benefit to 11-5. 
 
After Bronx got a run back in the top of the fifth, the Express scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to increase their advantage to 15-6. The big blow in the inning came off the bat of rookie left fielder Jeanpaul Alicea Albertorio who drove in two runs with a single.
 
The Broncos continued to claw back as they scored two runs in the sixth to narrow Monroe's vantage to 15-8. The Express countered with two runs of their own in the home half of the sixth, sparked by an RBI single courtesy of sophomore catcher Hecxiel Perez.
 
Freshman pitcher Yariel Perez came out of the bullpen for the Express in the top of the seventh and pitched a scoreless frame to lock down the victory for Monroe.
 
Sophomore pitcher Kevin Montes was credited with the victory for the Express as he pitched 1.2 innings in relief.
 
At the plate for Monroe, Rodriguez went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a walk. Espinal went 2-for-3, including a double, with three runs scored and two walks. Alicea Albertorio produced four RBIs, scored three times, earned a pair of walks, and picked up a stolen bag. Cruz also brought four runs in, while earning a base on balls and crossing home plate. Freshman shortstop Yan Ortiz Torres had a productive game with two hits, just as many walks, a pair of stolen bases, two runs scored, and a run batted in. Hecxiel Perez had two hits, including a double, while scoring a duo of runs and earning a walk. Quezada reached via a base on balls.
 
In game two, Monroe's bats came storming out of the gate with four runs scored in the opening inning to grab a 4-0 lead. Flores opened the scoring with a ground-rule RBI double to left. The next batter was Hecxiel Perez who smashed a traditional double to left which drove in two runs to put Monroe up, 3-0. Four batters later, Cruz hit a sacrifice fly to center which scored Hecxiel Perez from third for Monroe's fourth run of the inning. 
 
Bronx answered right back in the top of the second with four runs to tie the game. However, Monroe snatched the momentum right back with five runs in the bottom of the second. The highlight of the express' big stanza was a two-run homer to left by freshman catcher Elio Sanchez which made it 9-4 in favor of Monroe – Bronx. Earlier in the inning, Rodriguez produced an RBI single and freshman right fielder Edwin Minaya Jr. launched an RBI triple down the left-field line which scored Rodriguez.
 
Monroe – Bronx continued to pad its lead in the bottom of the third with two runs, highlighted by an RBI single from Flores, to extend its lead to 11-4.
 
The Broncos continued to hang around in the fourth as they scored two runs to pull to within five. 
 
The Express pulled away for good in the bottom fourth with three runs in the frame. Sophomore center fielder Antwon Beverly opened the scoring in the inning with an RBI single. Three batters later, Flores came up with the bases loaded. He singled to center and advanced to second on a fielding error. Three runs came in to score which inflated Monroe's hold to 15-6. Flores was credited with two RBIs on the play. 
 
In the top of the seventh, rookie pitcher José Capellán came out of the bullpen for Monroe – Bronx. He retired the side in order, including two strikeouts, to clinch the sweep for the Express.
 
On the mound, freshman pitcher Luis Roman earned the win in relief for Monroe as he struck out two batters and gave up just one earned run in 4.2 innings pitched. 
 
At the plate for the Express, Flores went 4-for-5, including two doubles, produced four runs batted in, stole a base, and scored. Alicea Albertorio scored four times, executed a base hit, and stole a bag. Ortiz Torres singled, drove in a run, and scored three times. Hecxiel Perez provided three RBIs, while Rodriguez drew two walks. Minaya Jr. scored twice and earned a base on balls. Cruz walked and stole a base. Beverly crossed home plate twice, worked two walks, and stole a pair of bases. 
 
Monroe – Bronx will host Queensborough Community College in a Region 15 game, at Flowers Park Baseball Field, on Tuesday afternoon. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m.

The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
