Express Baseball Drops Non-Region Game to NJCAA Division II Sussex County

AUGUSTA, N.J. – The Monroe College – Bronx baseball team dropped a non-region game to NJCAA Division II Sussex County Community College, 11-1, at Skylands Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

The Skylanders (20-15) scored all 11 of their runs over the course of the first three innings. Out of the bullpen for the Express (15-19) was freshman pitcher Leonardo Martinez as he shut down the opposing lineup with 3.1 shutout innings pitched.

Monroe – Bronx got its run in the top of the sixth thanks to an RBI single by freshman catcher Yadiel Santana, with two outs, that scored freshman third baseman Giovanny Flores from third to put the Express on the board. It was not enough as Sussex County went on to earn the victory.

Leading the way for the Express at the plate was rookie right fielder Edwin Minaya Jr. who went 2-for-3. Flores produced a couple of singles. Second-year designated hitter Hecxiel Perez drilled a double. Santana, sophomore center fielder Antwon Beverly, classmate Camilo Rodriguez, and rookie outfielder Alfredo Jimenez Jr. each drew a walk. Freshman shortstop Yan Ortiz Torres and first-year second baseman Jeanpaul Alicea Albertorio each reached base with a single.

For Sussex County, sophomore pitcher Eliot Goulet was credited with the victory in relief.

Monroe – Bronx will take on local Region 15 rival Bronx Community College, at Ohio Field, on Friday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
