NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Monroe College – Bronx men's volleyball team dropped its non-region match in straight sets to Bryant & Stratton – Wis., in straight sets, at the Monroe Athletic Complex on Saturday morning. Set scores were 25-10, 25-17, and 25-7.
The Bobcats (7-6) earned wire-to-wire victories in the first and third sets. The second set was a competitive battle. A series of opposing errors helped the Express (0-15) earn a 4-3 advantage. Bryan & Stratton scored the next three points to jump out in front. Later in the stanza, freshman middle blocker
Jeremy Rivera-Aponte slammed home a kill to allow Monroe to tie the game at seven and then he had another successful attack to even it up at eight. Several rallies later, Express rookie opposite hitter
Marvin Culmer knocked down a kill to knot the set, 12-12. The Bobcats scored the next two points to take the lead for good at 14-12. After a kill by Rivera-Aponte cut Monroe's deficit to 17-16, Bryant & Stratton finished the second set on an 8-1 run to claim the stanza, 25-17, and take a 2-0 lead in the match before earning the sweep.
Leading the way for the Express during the contest was Rivera-Aponte who tallied five kills, six digs, three blocks, and an assist. Freshman middle blocker
Mickey Mingo returned to action for Monroe and had a strong performance with four kills and a pair of digs. Rookie outside hitter
Anthony Estevez anchored the defense with seven digs, while freshman setter
Wiltor Cubas tallied 11 assists and four digs. Culmer provided three kills and a duo of digs. First-year defensive specialist
Harold Romero chipped in with six digs and a kill. Rookie middle blocker
Shain Frazier added three digs, while first-year middle blocker
Domingo Brito scored a kill and registered a dig.
For the Bobcats, sophomore outside hitter Nigel Litts led the way with 15 kills, eight digs, and four service aces.
Monroe – Bronx will travel to Pennsylvania on Tuesday for a non-region match against Harcum College. First serve at Klein Hall Gymnasium is set for 6:30 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
