Express Baseball Falters Late Against NJCAA Division II Orange County

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – The Monroe College baseball team dropped a non-region game to NJCAA Division II Orange County Community College, 13-7, at Colt Baseball Field on Monday afternoon.

The game was tied at seven heading to the bottom of the eight, but the Colts (4-8) scored six runs in the frame and then retired Monroe's lineup in the ninth to secure the victory.

The loss snaps Monroe's four-game winning streak.

The Express (4-11) got off to a good start in the game by scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first. The first run was a sacrifice fly to right off the bat of freshman third baseman Giovanny Flores that scored sophomore center field Bryant Quezada to put the Blue and Gold on the board. Then with runners at the corners and two outs, second-year first baseman Camilo Rodriguez drilled a single to right that scored freshmanright fielder Alfredo Jimenez Jr. to extend the Express' lead to 2-0.

After Orange County got one run back in the bottom frame, the Express scored pair of runs in the top of the second to go up, 4-1.

The Colts countered with two runs each in the third and four innings and added one run in the fifth to jump out to a 6-4 benefit.

In the top of the sixth, Monroe had a runner on third with two outs. Quezada lined a single to center field which scored freshman shortstop Yan Ortiz Torres to pull Monroe to within one.

Orange County extended its lead to two in the home half of the sixth. In the top of the eight, Monroe had runners on first and second with two outs. Jimenez Jr. lined a single to left that scored both freshman second baseman Jeanpaul Alicea Albertorio and Quezada to tie the game at seven runs apiece. However, Monroe could not push across another run.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Colts' bats broke the game open with six runs to take a 13-7 advantage.

Monroe – Bronx was able to get two runners on base in the top of the ninth but failed to score and Orange County went on to earn the come-from-behind victory.

For the Express during the afternoon, freshman catcher Elio Sanchez reached base with a double. Jimenez Jr. went 2-for-3, worked a walk, and stole a base, while Quezada collected two hits, stole just as many bases, drove in two runs, and earned a base on balls. Ortiz Torres stole three bases and drew two walks. Sophomore designated hitter Hecxiel Perez reached base with a single and a walk. Alicea Albertorio singled, scored twice, and stole a base.

For Orange County, sophomore pitcher Kurtis Martin got the win by pitching two innings of relief and giving up no earned runs.
