Express Basketball Teams to Battle Hostos in Region 15 Semifinals on Saturday

BRONX – Saturday is a big day as both the women's and men's basketball teams will take on Hostos Community College in the Region 15 Semifinals at Kingsborough Gymnasium. The women will begin at 12:00 p.m., while the men will tip off at 6:00 p.m.

The winner of each game will advance to the regional championship games which will take place on Sunday at Kingsborough Gymnasium.
 
On the women's side, Hostos (21-4) won both head-to-head matchups during the regular season. The Express (16-16) are the two-time reigning Region 15 Champions, but they will have their work cut out for them as Hostos is ranked No. 14 nationally and earned the top seed in the Region 15 standings. 
 
Leading the way for fourth-seeded Monroe – Bronx this season has been freshman guard Daysiah Smith who has scored 640 points this season, ranking her No. 1 on the program's all-time single-season and career scoring lists. She is averaging 22.1 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.7 assists, and 4.6 steals per game this season.
 
Monroe – Bronx is coming off a convincing victory in the regional quarterfinal game over fifth-seeded Borough of Manhattan Community College, 104-72, at Monroe Athletic Complex back on February 27.
 
For the Caimans, freshman forward Chyna Bryant is averaging a double-double per game with 12.2 points and 11.8 rebounds per game this year. She has also been a force on the defensive end by forcing 43 steals and blocking 31 shots so far in 2023-24. 
 
Hostos is coming off a dominating 58-31 triumph in the regional quarterfinal against eighth-seeded Suffolk County Community College, at The Swamp, this past Tuesday evening. 
 
On the men's side, both the second-seeded Express (20-10) and third-seeded Caimans (20-9) split their two head-to-head regular season matchups this season, with the home team winning each contest. 
 
The Express have been led by sophomore forward Abubakar Kromah who is generating 19.0 points, 10.4 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 1.8 steals per game this season. 
 
In Monroe's 77-76 overtime victory in the regional quarterfinal over seventh-seeded Queensborough Community College, last Tuesday night at the Monroe Athletic Complex, Kromah made big plays on both ends of the floor during the late stages of regulation and in the overtime period. He hit the game-winning free throw with 2.3 seconds left in overtime that broke a 76-76 tie and helped the Express advance to the semifinal round. 
 
For the Caimans, sophomore guard TeAmo Ebron is having a great all-around season with 14.8 points, 10.1 rebounds, 6.3 assists, and 2.2 steals per contest. 
 
Hostos earned a convincing victory in the Region 15 Quarterfinal over sixth-seeded Suffolk County Community College, 91-70, at The Swamp last Tuesday evening.

ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
