Express Basketball Teams to Host Suffolk County on Tuesday Evening

BRONX - The Monroe College - Bronx women's and men's basketball teams will battle Suffolk County Community College, in a Region 15 doubleheader on Tuesday evening, at Monsignor Scanlan Gymnasium. The women's game will start at 6:00 p.m., while the men's contest will tip off at 8:00 p.m.

On the women's side, Monroe currently sits in fourth place in the Region 15 standings at 8-3 in the region (13-11 overall), while Suffolk County (1-16, 1-13 Region 15) is occupying the eighth and final playoff spot. The Express won the first head-to-head matchup between the two teams this season by a score of 56-43 at Brookhaven Gymnasium back on November 28. Leading the way for the Express in that contest was freshman guard Daysiah Smith who netted 19 points, grabbed seven rebounds, forced just as many steals, and delivered four assists. Rookie guard Angeleny Cobos provided firepower off the bench for the Express with 17 points on 6-for-12 shooting from the field, including 5-for-11 from 3-point range. For the Sharks, freshman guard Alyssa Dixon scored a game-high 25 points, while bringing down six rebounds. Rookie forward Sanderlee Thervil snatched a contest-best 13 boards and distributed four assists.

The Express are 5-3 all-time against the Sharks.

For the men, the Express are in sole possession of second place in the regional standings as their five-game Region 15 win streak has earned them an impressive record of 9-4 in the region and 15-9 overall. The Sharks (9-11, 9-8 Region 15) stand in sixth place. Earlier in the season, Suffolk County earned a thrilling victory over Monroe, 56-54, out on Long Island back on November 28. During that contest, sophomore guard Jovan Young hit the game-tying free throw for the Express (4-4, 1-3 Region 15) with 16 seconds left on the clock, making the score 54-54. However, on the next possession for Suffolk County, freshman forward Joshua Rodriguez was deep inside the paint and converted a layup, while being fouled, to give the Sharks the lead at 56-54 with four seconds left. Although he missed the free throw, his bucket ended up being the official game-winner as Monroe could not convert the contest-winning 3-point shot attempt.

Monroe - Bronx is 4-8 all-time against Suffolk County.
