GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The Monroe College – Bronx women's basketball team suffered a Region 15 defeat to nationally ranked No. 10 Nassau Community College, 75-46, at Nassau CC Main Gym on Thursday evening.
The Express (14-14, 9-5 Region 15) got off to a good start as they jumped out to an early 9-4 advantage and then took a 17-14 benefit into the second quarter. The Lions (17-6, 13-3 Region 15) took over the game in the second stanza by outscoring the Express, 14-2, during the frame to take a commanding 28-19 hold into the intermission.
Monroe – Bronx pulled to within six a few times during the third quarter, but a 14-1 run by Nassau gave them a 51-32 advantage and dug Monroe in too deep of a hole. The Lions went on to win the game by 29.
Leading the way for Monroe was freshman guard
Tymere Moorer who scored 14 points, grabbed six rebounds, and forced a pair of steals. First-year guard
Daysiah Smith generated 10 points, five assists, three rebounds, and just as many steals. Freshman guard
Jah Gunter netted nine points and snatched six boards, while classmate
Leanna Morales had eight points and two assists.
For Nassau, freshman forward Aiyana Hamilton scored a game-high 32 points, grabbed nine rebounds, and forced three steals. Second-year guard Shyann Parker had a double-double with 15 points and 14 steals, while clutching seven caroms and delivering six helpers. First-year forward Janatta Bartley also had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds to go along with eight steals and two assists.
Monroe – Bronx will host NJCAA Division II Union College, a team that is ranked No. 10 in the country, on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff at Monsignor Scanlan Gymnasium is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
