POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Monroe College - Bronx women's basketball team fell just short to Dutchess Community College, 69-68, at Falcon Hall Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. It was a regular season contest but it did not count for the Region 15 standings.
The Express (14-13 had the ball in the closing seconds with a chance to win it, but could not convert on the potential game-winning shot as the final buzzer went off.
Monroe - Bronx had a 41-36 advantage at the intermission, but Dutchess (10-6) outscored the Express, 33-27, during the final 20 minutes of play.
Leading the way for Monroe was rookie guard
Tiffany Newsome who had a double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds, while forcing four steals and distributing three assists. Classmate
Daysiah Smith also had 17 points and four steals, while dishing out six assists. First-year guard
Tymere Moorer generated 14 points, five rebounds, and a trio of steals. Rookie guard
Davian Myers snatched nine boards, while classmate
Angeleny Cobos drained a pair of shots from beyond the arc. First-year guard
Leanna Morales converted three free throws and brought down five caroms. Sophomore forward
Xing Stewart-Greer had four points and just as many rebounds.
Monroe - Bronx will conclude its three-game road trip on Tuesday with a matchup against nationally ranked No. 13 Nassau Community College. The Region 15 contest at Nassau CC Gymnasium will begin at 6:00 p.m.Â
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
