THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The nationally ranked No. 13 Monroe University – Bronx women's basketball team was victorious in Region 15 play over Bronx Community College, 113-39, at Monsignor Scanlan Gym on Thursday evening.
Monroe advances to 6-1 in the region and 10-3 overall. The Broncos drop to 2-5 both against regional opponents and for the season.
The Express led from wire to wire, and their defense forced the Broncos to commit 62 turnovers.
Two Monroe players produced double-doubles during the game. Freshman
Beverly Williams scored 20 points and dished out a career-best 11 assists, while forcing nine steals and grabbing six rebounds. Sophomore
Makira Bunsie netted 16 points and grabbed 12 boards with nine of them occurring on the offensive end.
Sophomore
Tiffany Newsome had a productive game for the Blue and Gold with 15 points, nine rebounds, five steals, and four assists. Classmate
Tymere Moorer added 17 points, snatched five rebounds, forced just as many steals, and delivered two assists. Freshman
Salimah Williams had a productive game with 13 points, seven rebounds, just as many steals, and five assists.
Also helping Monroe was sophomore
Cheyenne Hoxie who drained three shots from beyond the arc. Classmates
Jah Gunter and
Da'Mya Cheatham each scored seven points and gathered six boards with the former forcing four steals and dishing out two assists.
No. 13 Monroe - Bronx will have a national showdown against regional rival and nationally ranked No. 9 Kingsborough Community College on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff at Kingsborough Gym is set for 1:00 p.m.
