BROOKLYN – In the battle of nationally ranked teams, the No. 13 Monroe University – Bronx women's basketball team fell short to No. 9 Kingsborough Community College in a Region 15 contest, 79-66, at Kingsborough Gym on Saturday afternoon.
The Express (10-4, 6-2 Region 15) had a brief 3-0 lead to start the game but then the Wave (14-1, 7-1 Region 15) answered with seven straight points to jump out in front for good. Monroe played catch-up throughout the remainder of the game.
After falling behind by 11 in the second quarter, the Express went on a 10-2 run, capped off by a layup from freshman
Beverly Williams, to narrow their deficit to 25-22 with 6:20 left before the break. However, the Wave finished the quarter strong, outscoring the Blue and Gold by a 9-2 margin during the final 2:38 of play to take a 10-point cushion into the intermission (39-29).
Monroe could not generate a consistent run to get back into the game in the second half as Kingsborough went up by as many as 14 on its way to the 79-66 victory.
Sophomore
Makira Bunsie had a career game for the Express with 30 points, 14 rebounds, and five steals. Ten of those rebounds came on the offensive side.
Also helping the Express were second-year players
Davian Myers and
Tiffany Newsome who produced four points, 12 boards, two blocks, and two steals each.
Beverly Williams generated five points and six assists. Freshman
Salimah Williams added four points, five assists, and three caroms. Sophomore
Jah Gunter netted seven points, forced five steals, and snatched two rebounds. Classmate
Tymere Moorer provided seven points, three boards, and two steals.
For the Wave, sophomore Endya Greene had a monster game with 36 points, 12 rebounds, five steals, and four assists. Rookie Zakieya Williams notched 22 points, seven steals, a pair of blocks, and two boards. Sophomore Kayla Wilson had a near double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds, while dishing out five helpers.
Monroe will return to action on Saturday, December 14, when they battle NJCAA Division II Orange County Community College. The action at Orange County CC Gymnasium is set for 12:00 p.m.
