NEW YORK – The Monroe University – Bronx men's basketball team continued its strong start to the season on Thursday evening by earning a Region 15 victory over Borough of Manhattan Community College, 81-57, at BMCC Gymnasium.
The Express are now 4-1 overall and 3-0 in regional play. The Panthers fall to 2-2 for both the season and against regional opponents.
"Our effort and energy were great all night and helped us get the win," Express Head Men's Basketball Coach
Chris Neely said.
Leading the way for the Express was freshman forward
Dimitre Alston who had a double-double with 17 points and a career-high 20 rebounds while also dishing out six assists. Rookie guard
Michael Samuda also scored 17 points. He snatched six boards and distributed four assists in the process. Sophomore forward
Shain Frazier had a productive night in the paint with 12 points, 11 rebounds, two helpers, and a block. Rookie forward
Paolo Avvento generated 10 points, a trio of rebounds, three steals, and a pair of assists.
Also helping the Express was freshman guard
Malike Smart who tallied eight points, three steals, and a pair of caroms. Rookie guard
Jayquan Lee added six points, three boards, a pair of assists, and just as many steals. Sophomore forward
David Malone netted four points and gathered eight rebounds.
Monroe – Bronx will take on NJCAA Division II Anne Arundel Community College, during the Shannon Williams Classic, on Saturday afternoon. The game will take place on the campus of Middlesex College at 3:00 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE UNIVERSITY
The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe University marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
