EDISON, N.J. – The Monroe University – Bronx men's basketball team earned an impressive victory over NJCAA Division II Anne Arundel Community College, 68-64, during the Shannon Williams Classic on the campus of Middlesex College on Saturday afternoon. The Express advance to 5-1, while the Riverhawks drop to 1-1.

Monroe had a healthy lead during most of the contest. The Riverhawks pulled to within one late in the game but the Express drained key free throws down the stretch to clinch the victory.
Freshman forward
Dimitre Alston had a strong game for Monroe with 26 points, nine rebounds, and three assists. Classmate
Michael Samuda generated 12 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Sophomore forward
Shain Frazier had another strong performance in the paint with eight points, 11 rebounds, and four assists. Rookie forward
Paolo Avvento scored six points and gathered two boards. Classmate
David Malone gathered eight rebounds.
Freshman guard
Jayquan Lee helped the Express with four points, two rebounds, and just as many steals. Sophomore center
Rene Williams and rookie guard
Malike Smart each scored four points.
Monroe – Bronx will battle Nassau Community College, in Region 15 play, at Nassau CC Main Gym on Thursday evening. Tipoff is set for 8:00 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE UNIVERSITY
The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe University marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
