THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The nationally ranked No. 14 Monroe University – Bronx women's basketball team earned a convincing victory in Region 15 play over LaGuardia Community College, 85-54, at Monsignor Scanlan Gym on Tuesday evening. The Express are now 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the region. The Red Hawks were undefeated coming into the game but now fall to 3-1 for the season and 2-1 against regional opponents.
"We played with great energy tonight," Express Head Women's Basketball Coach
Damel Ling said. "Our defensive intensity was high, which created a number of offensive opportunities for us."
The game was close in the early stages as the Express held a 26-19 advantage with 6:37 remaining in the opening half. Then, a jump shot by freshman guard
Amira McCleod jump-started a 10-1 run by the Express, capped off by a layup from sophomore guard
Tymere Moorer, which inflated Monroe's cushion to 36-20 with just over three minutes remaining until the break.
The Express broke the game open in the third quarter, as they built their lead to 30. Monroe – Bronx led by as many as 33 in the fourth quarter before earning the regional win by a score of 85-54.
"I'm happy with our effort tonight," Ling said. "If we play hard, we will give ourselves a chance every night."
Leading the way for Monroe was sophomore forward
Makira Bunsie who tallied a double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds, including 11 offensive boards, while forcing four steals.

Moorer had a near double-double for the Express with 16 points and nine boards, while collecting six steals and distributing four assists. Rookie guard
Beverly Williams tallied 14 points, four rebounds, just as many assists, and three steals.
"Bev Williams and
Tymere Moorer continued their solid play," Ling said.
Also helping the Express was sophomore guard
Tiffany Newsome who scored 12 points, forced a game-high nine steals, snatched four caroms, and delivered three assists. Classmate
Davian Myers scored four points, gathered six steals, grabbed four rebounds, and added two assists. McCleod tallied eight points, three steals, and two assists. Freshman guard
Salimah Williams clutched eight caroms, dished out five assists, and scored four points.
Monroe – Bronx will battle Borough of Manhattan Community College, in a Region 15 matchup, on Thursday evening. Tipoff is set for 5:00 p.m.

The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe University marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
