Strong Defense Leads No. 14 Express Women's Basketball to Region 15 Win Over BMCC

NEW YORK – The nationally ranked No. 14 Monroe University – Bronx women's basketball team earned a convincing Region 15 victory over Borough of Manhattan Community College, 90-28, at BMCC Gymnasium on Thursday evening. The Express advance to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in Region 15 play, while the Panthers drop to 0-4 for both the season and in regional play.

Monroe's defense pitched a shutout in the opening quarter, and they outscored the opposition 20-0 during the game's opening 10 minutes. Monroe jumped out to a 26-0 lead to start the game, as BMCC did not register its first two points until 1:24 into the second quarter.

"We were aggressive defensively," Express Head Women's Basketball Coach Damel Ling said. "Our defense helped create offensive opportunities for us tonight."

Five players for the Express reached double figures in scoring. Sophomore forward Makira Bunsie tallied 14 points, seven rebounds, four steals, and three assists. Freshman guard Salimah Williams produced a double-double with 11 points and a career-high 10 assists, while forcing six steals and gathering four rebounds.

Rookie guard Beverly Williams netted 13 points, delivered five assists, snatched four caroms, and collected just as many steals for the Express. Sophomore guard Tymere Moorer finished with 12 points, five rebounds, five steals, and three assists.

"We did a great job sharing the ball tonight," Ling said. "We just finished a pretty grueling stretch playing six games in eight days. We are definitely better than we were last week at this time."

Also helping Monroe was second-year forward Da'Mya Cheatham who scored 10 points and clutched a pair of caroms. Sophomore forward Tiffany Newsome had a productive game with eight points, five rebounds, four assists, three steals, and a pair of blocks.
