Express Fall to CCRI in First of Weekend Series

The Express conclude their series against CCRI tomorrow, Sunday, April 16th

WARWICK, RI – Monroe Express softball took to Warwick, RI on Saturday afternoon for a non-conference doubleheader against the Community College of Rhode Island Knights, where Monroe fell in both contests. Game one concluded with a 19-1 final, and game two with a 9-1 finish. The Express fall to 0-18 on the season.

Game one: CCRI Knights 19, Monroe Express 1

The Express watched the game slip away early, with the Knights scoring 14 of their 19 runs in the first inning. CCRI scored on a single by Jenna Medeiros, a home run by Emily Gil, a fielder's choice by Ashley Klingberg, a double by Lucie Willett, a single by Casey Regine, and a single by Abby Pinault, all in the first inning.

Monroe's lone run in the game came in the first, when the Express took the lead after Ciara Aviles scored on a single to center field hit by Angelica Uribe. 

Samantha Marsella got the win for the Knights. The hurler lasted five innings, allowing six hits and one run while striking out four.

Uribe took the loss for the Express as the pitcher allowed 17 hits and 19 runs over four innings, striking out one.

Adalianys Guzman led Monroe with two hits in three at bats. 

CCRI totaled 17 hits, as Regine, Willett, Gil all managed three hits for the Knights. CCRI was sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error. Pinault had the most chances in the field with four.

Game two: CCRI Knights 9, Monroe Express 1

In game two of the day's doubleheader, the Express were unable to contain CCRI giving up nine runs in the loss. The Knights fired up the offense in the first inning as Hanna Deas singled on a 1-1 count, scoring one run.

CCRI scored five runs in the third inning, as the period was driven by singles by Regine and Morgan Rodrigues, a groundout by Willett, and a double by Gil.

Victoria Butler was the winning pitcher for Community College of Rhode Island. The ace surrendered one run on three hits over five innings, striking out four.

Emily Velez took the loss on the mound. The pitcher surrendered nine runs on 11 hits over four and a third innings, striking out two.
Caitlin Molina, Guzman, and Velez each collected one hit to lead the Express. 

CCRI racked up 11 hits on the day.  Pinault and Klingberg each racked up three hits for Community College of Rhode Island.

The Express finish their weekend series with CCRI tomorrow, Sunday, April 15th inside Brayton Park Softball Field in Warwick, RI. First pitch is slated for 1 PM.

ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 14 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
