Express Come Up Short Against Suffolk

The Express travel on Thursday, April 20th to take on Rowan College of Gloucester County

SELDEN, NY – Monroe Express softball began their Region 15 schedule Tuesday afternoon, taking on the Suffolk County Community College Sharks inside Ammerman Campus Softball Field. Monroe fell to the Sharks in their doubleheader with final scores of 20-3 (game one) and 13-0 (game two). The Express fall to 0-20 with the pair of losses.

Game one: Suffolk Sharks 20, Monroe Express 3

The Express watched the game slip away early in a 20-3 loss to Suffolk in game one of Tuesday's doubleheader. The Sharks scored on a double by Keelynn Kelly, a single by Ciara Morales, a walk by Laci Edwards, and a fielder's choice by Kelly in the first inning.

Suffolk got their offense started in the first after an error scored one run for the Sharks. Suffolk ended the first leading 9-0. Monroe got into the scoring column in the third after a fielder's choice by Emily Velez allowed Gabriella Cid to cross home plate. Two batters later, Velez found herself in scoring position after a single to center field hit by Adalianys Guzman. The Express struggled defensively throughout the game, giving up 20 runs to Suffolk in the end.

Morales was the winning pitcher for Suffolk. The ace surrendered three runs on five hits over five innings, striking out two.
Angelica Uribe took the loss for the Express. The hurler went four innings, allowing 20 runs on 11 hits.

Guzman led Monroe with two hits in three at bats.

The Sharks racked up 11 hits in the game. Jaden Thompson, Katie Buerkel, Kelly and Edwards each collected two hits in the game. Suffolk was sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error. Buerkel had the most chances in the field with six.

Game two: Suffolk Sharks 13, Monroe Express 0

The Express were unable to get on the board in their 13-0 loss to the Sharks in game two of their doubleheader. Suffolk scored on a single by Angelica Magliocco, a groundout by Emily Hess, a single by Gabriella Vacchio, a home run by Kaylin McDonald, and a walk by Kelly in the first.

Suffolk opened up scoring in the first inning, scoring two runs when Magliocco singled.

One bright spot for the Express was a single by Ashley Peralta in the third inning, and a Thiare Sanchez single in the fifth.

Buerkel took the win for Suffolk, surrendering zero runs on two hits over five innings, striking out 11 and walking zero.
Velez was on the other side of the token for Monroe. The pitcher lasted two and two-thirds innings, allowing seven hits and eight runs while striking out two. Uribe threw one and one-third innings in relief.

Peralta and Sanchez each managed one hit to lead Monroe in the ball game.

The Sharks totaled ten hits.  Kelly and Magliocco both managed two hits. Suffolk was sure-handed and didn't commit a single error. Kelly made the most plays with seven.

The Express continue on the road on Thursday, April 20th for a non-conference doubleheader against the Rowan College of Gloucester County Roadrunners in Sewell, NJ. First pitch is slated for 3:30 PM.

ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 14 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
