NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Monroe Express women's basketball sought their sixth straight victory Thursday evening, and achieved that feat with a 101-41 victory over the Kingsborough Community College Wave inside Monroe Athletic Complex. The Express' updated record is 19-7 (12-0 Region 15) and the Wave falls to 3-13 (3-7 Region 15).
Janay Legagneur got the Express into the scoring column after an
Aleah James feed only six seconds into the quarter. Hagar Elwan answered with two consecutive buckets, prompting an early Express timeout. Following the brief break in action, Monroe embarked on a 23-2 run, including seven points from
Nyeira Spady during that time. Going into the second with a 21 point lead,
Crystal Traverso added to this total with a steal and layup on the fast break. The Express continued to get out and run going 16-21 from the field in the second quarter, including seven steals, eventually going into the half with a 44 point lead, putting the score at 60-16. The Express continued their high intensity play for the rest of the contest, with the final eventually settling at 101-41.
Fatima Thompson led the Express with a season-high 18 points, 11 rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block. Spady followed with 16 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two blocks.
Taina Maldonado added 12 points, 14 rebounds (season-high), five steals, and three assists. Traverso poured in 11 points, four rebounds, three assists and one steal while James pitched in 10 points, four assists, three steals and two rebounds.
The Express continue their home stand Saturday (Feb. 11) in a non-conference Sophomore Day contest against the Union County College Owls inside Monroe Athletic Complex in New Rochelle, NY at 1 PM.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 14 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
