Express Defeat Union Owls in Sophomore Day Thriller

The Express compete in their final home matchup Tuesday (Feb. 14) against Nassau

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Monroe Express women's basketball hit the floor at home Saturday afternoon in a non-conference Sophomore Day bout against the Union County College Owls resulting in a 73-67 win inside Monroe Athletic Complex. Today the Express honored their 2022-23 graduating players comprising of Alyssa Grant, Magan Jackson, Aleah James, Ariel Johnson, Ariella Johnson, Sierra Jones, Janay Legagneur, Taina Maldonado, Maria Negron, Nyeira Spady, Fatima Thompson and Crystal Traverso. The Express improves to 20-7 and the Owls fall to 20-5.

Following the Action
  • Maria Negron gets the Express on the board with a layup at the 9:33 mark in the first.
  • Miyoshi Ellis gives the Owls their largest lead of the game at four, after a layup puts the score at 12-8.
  • Ariella Johnson takes it coast to coast to tie the game at 16.
  • Janay Legagneur follows her own miss to give the Express the lead, 22-21.
  • Fending off a Union run, Ariella Johnson beats the halftime buzzer.
  • After holding the lead for all of the second quarter, Amyah Mars gives the Owls a one point lead, 45-44.
  • Legageur makes the Express lead six halfway through the fourth after a huge offensive rebound. 
  • The Express continued to knock down free throws down the stretch, including the final shot by Aleah James to settle the 73-67 victory.
Legagneur led all scorers with a huge double-double statline of 21 points, 13 rebounds, two assists and one block. James was close behind with 19 points, one rebound and one steal. Ariella Johnson added 10 points, a season-high 12 rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block. Nyeira Spady pitched in nine points, 12 rebounds and one assist, while Sierra Jones contributed eight points, six rebounds and two assists.

The Express compete in their final regular season game Tuesday (Feb. 14) taking on the Nassau Community College Lions in Region 15 inside Monroe Athletic Complex in New Rochelle, NY at 6 PM.

ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 14 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
