Cobos' Strong Shooting Propels No. 10 Express Women's Basketball to Region 15 Victory Over Suffolk County

SELDON, N.Y. – The nationally ranked No. 10 Monroe College – Bronx women's basketball team earned a convincing wire-to-wire Region 15 victory on the road over Suffolk County Community College, 56-43, at Brookhaven Gymnasium on Tuesday, November 28.

The Express remain undefeated in both Region 15 play and against NJCAA Division III opponents for the season, advancing their record in both situations to 4-0 (4-4 overall).

Both teams were held scoreless for the first 3:37 of the contest but then a successful jump shot by sophomore forward Kristina Poitier-Wells sparked 14 unanswered points for the Express, in a span of 2:05, which gave Monroe a commanding hold it would not surrender for the remainder of the evening.

Monroe led by as many as 26 during the second half before earning the victory by 13 points over the Sharks (1-5, 1-3 Region 15).

Leading the way for the Express was freshman guard Daysiah Smith who netted 19 points, grabbed seven rebounds, forced just as many steals, and delivered four assists. Rookie guard Angeleny Cobos provided firepower off the bench for the Express with 17 points on 6-for-12 shooting from the field, including 5-for-11 from 3-point range. She nailed four shots from beyond the arc during the Express' big run in the opening quarter.

Poitier-Wells grabbed 12 rebounds, six on the offensive end and just as many on defense. Sophomore guard Kuari Green tallied nine points, just as many caroms, six steals, and a pair of assists. Freshman guard Tiffany Newsome brought down nine rebounds and collected a pair of steals.

For the Sharks, freshman guard Alyssa Dixon scored a game-high 25 points, while bringing down six rebounds. Rookie forward Sanderlee Thervil snatched a contest-best 13 boards and distributed four assists.

It will be the battle of nationally ranked Region 15 teams on Thursday, November 30, at Monsignor Scanlan Gymnasium. No. 10 Monroe hosts No. 14 Nassau Community College. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
