THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – In a battle of nationally ranked and undefeated Region 15 women's basketball teams it was No. 10 Monroe College – Bronx who earned the convincing victory over No. 14 Nassau Community College, 66-36, at Monsignor Scanlan Gymnasium on Thursday, November 30. The Express remain undefeated in Region 15 play, bumping its regional record to 5-0 (5-4 overall). The Lions drop to 4-1 in Region 15 contests and 5-1 for the season.
The Express' strong defense early in the contest set the tone as they held Nassau to zero field goals all the way until 1:16 remaining mark in the first quarter. Monroe - Bronx surged to a big lead early as a triple by freshman guard
Daysiah Smith gave the home team a 15-3 hold, less than eight minutes into the contest, and they never looked back.
In fact, the Express outscored the Lions in each of the four quarters and built their lead up to 35 during the game, on their way to the impressive Region 15 victory.
Monroe's defense forced Nassau to commit 47 turnovers. The Lions shot just 19.6% from the field and 8.3% from 3-point range during the evening, thanks to strong contesting by the Express.
"This was a very big game for both teams coming in with both of us being undefeated in the region." Express Head Coach
Damel Ling said. "Our intensity on defense got us off to a great start. Our defensive pressure got to them. We stuck to the game plan. We defended, defended, defended."
Leading the way for the Express was sophomore forward
Kristina Poitier-Wells who had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds, while blocking six shots and dishing out five assists. Smith netted 15 points, tallied six helpers, collected five steals, and snatched three boards. Rookie guard
Angeleny Cobos netted 11 points and forced a trio of steals, while freshman guard
Tymere Moorer generated five points and eight caroms.
Also helping Monroe was freshman guard
Tiffany Newsome who registered seven points and six rebounds. First-year guard
Davian Myers provided four points, seven rebounds, and a pair of steals, while second-year forward
Xing Stewart-Greer added four points and six boards.
Monroe – Bronx will host NJCAA Division II Orange County Community College, at Monsignor Scanlan Gymnasium on Saturday, December 2. Tipoff is set for 12:00 p.m.

The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
