Express Men's Basketball Drops Region 15 Game to BMCC

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. - The Monroe College - Bronx men's basketball team suffered its first Region 15 loss of the year by a score of 72-50 to Borough of Manhattan Community College, at Monsignor Scanlan Gymnasium, on Thursday, November 16.

The Panthers (3-2, 3-1 Region 15) finished the opening half on a 12-2 run to take a 29-20 hold into the intermission and then outscored the Express, 43-30, during the final 20 minutes of regulation play to earn the region win.

Leading the way for Monroe (3-2, 1-1 Region 15) was sophomore forward Abubakar Kromah who scored 13 points, grabbed four rebounds, and dished out three assists. Classmate Jovan Young provided nine points, three assists, and a pair of boards. Sophomore forward Anthony Bannister netted eight points, clutched six caroms, and delivered two assists, while second-year guard Derrick Simpson scored eight points and grabbed three rebounds off the bench. Sophomore guard Jaream Eason gathered eight boards and provided three points.

Monroe - Bronx trailed by seven in the early stages of the game, but answered with seven straight points, capped off by a layup from Kromah, to tie the contest up at nine points apiece. Later in the stanza, it was Eason's turn to tie the game for the Express as his layup made it 15-15 with 5:19 remaining in the half. After the Panthers reclaimed the lead, Simpson sparked the Express by taking a feed from Eason and burying a triple to give Monroe its first advantage of the evening, at 18-17, with 4:11 left to play until the break.

From that point on, BMCC completely took over the game. Freshman guard Khalil Black converted a layup, while being fouled, to give the visiting team the lead for good. He added the free throw to complete the traditional three-point play and extend the Panthers' vantage to 20-18 with 3:51 remaining. That began a stretch of BMCC scoring 12 of the final 14 points of the half to take a nine-point advantage into the intermission.

Monroe was not able to generate a run to get back into the contest during the second half. The Panthers led by double digits throughout the final period and went up by 27 at one time before earning the Region 15 victory, 72-50.

For BMCC, Black scored 23 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and forced a pair of steals. Freshman forward Isah Mohammed had an outstanding game with a game-high 18 boards to go along with nine points, seven blocks, three steals, and a pair of assists.

Monroe - Bronx will battle Union College, at Union College Gymnasium, on Saturday, November 18. Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
