CRANFORD, N.J. – The Monroe College – Bronx men's basketball team picked up a bounce-back victory over Union College by a score of 92-76, at Union College Gymnasium, on Saturday, November 18. The victory snaps a two-game losing streak for the Express who advance their record to 4-2 for the season.
Leading the way for Monroe was sophomore forward
Abubakar Kromah who had a huge game with a near triple-double as he scored 34 points, grabbed 21 rebounds, and dished out eight assists. He shot 12-for-16 from the field, good for a shooting percentage of .750.
Monroe – Bronx was outscored, 44-42, by Union (2-3) in the opening half but then dominated the second period, 50-32, on its way to the victory.
"We showed a lot of mental toughness and poise to pull out the win," Express Head Coach
Chris Neely said.
Monroe had a strong shooting night, as they converted 37 shots out of 58 attempts from the floor (63.8%)
Also helping the Express was sophomore guard
Jaream Eason who netted 17 points, shot 8-for-11 from the field, brought down seven boards, and dished out three assists. Classmate
Jovan Young also scored 17 points, while shooting 8-for-12 from the field and snatching six caroms.
Freshman guard
Steven McGriff chipped in for Monroe by producing seven points, six rebounds, and a duo of assists. Sophomore guard
Derrick Simpson tallied four points, gathered five boards, and collected a pair of steals. Second-year guard
Jevonté Valerie had five points and two rebounds, while sophomore forward
Anthony Bannister scored four points and gathered just as many rebounds. Classmate
Timothy Charles provided four points, a rebound, and an assist.
Monroe – Bronx has a big game on Tuesday, November 21, as the Express will host nationally ranked No. 7 and defending Region 15 Champion Dutchess Community College. Tipoff at Monsignor Scanlan Gymnasium is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I).
