LINCROFT, N.J. - The Monroe College - Bronx men's basketball team was defeated for the first time this season, dropping a 77-58 contest to the defending NJCAA National Champion and nationally ranked No. 1 Brookdale Community College, 77-58, during the second day of the Brookdale Classic on Sunday, November 12. The game took place at Robert J. Collins Arena on the campus of Brookdale Community College.
The Express (3-1) kept pace with the Jersey Blues (2-0) in the opening half, as the Blue and Gold only trailed by a score of 33-30 after 20 minutes of play. However, Brookdale pulled away in the second stanza by outscoring Monroe, 44-28, during the final regulation period to earn the victory.
Leading the way for the Express was sophomore guard
Jovan Young who tallied 12 points, two rebounds, and a pair of assists. Second-year forward
Abubakar Kromah had a near double-double with nine points and 10 boards, while dishing out a duo of assists. Sophomore guard
Jaream Eason came off the bench and generated 10 points and six caroms.
Also helping out Monroe - Bronx was sophomore forward
Anthony Bannister who netted nine points, on 4-for-5 shooting from the field, while clutching a pair of boards. Second-year guard
Jevonté Valerie provided eight points and five rebounds, while freshman guard
Steven McGriff recorded six points and two rebounds.
The Express will compete in Region 15 play on Thursday, November 16, with a matchup against Borough of Manhattan Community College. Tipoff at Monsignor Scanlan Gym will begin at approximately 8:00 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
