Express Women’s Basketball Stay Unbeaten in Region 15 Play After Win Over BMCC

The Express travel Thursday (Jan. 19) for conference action against Hostos Community College

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Staying hot in conference action, Monroe Express women's basketball returned home for a brief stint Tuesday (Jan. 17) for a Region 15 contest against the Borough of Manhattan Community College Panthers, resulting in a 78-39 victory. This victory kept the Express undefeated in region play at 8-0 on the season.

Emily Kennedy opened up the game with a layup, but not soon after, Sierra Jones would knock down a 3-pointer to move the Express into the lead, where they would not relinquish it for the remainder of the game. At the 2:34 mark, Alyssa Grant got inside for a layup, raising the Monroe advantage to 15 points. The Express kept their foot on the gas, going into the half time break with a 26 point advantage, leading 45-19. 

Demaris Andrews got the scoring going for the Panthers in the third, but the Express would answer with consecutive baskets by Janay Legagneur and Nyeira Spady. Leading by 30 at this point, the blue and gold would ride this momentum until the final buzzer, ending the game with a 78-39 final. 

Jones led the Express offensively with 17 points, two rebounds and one steal. Crystal Traverso followed with 11 points, three rebounds and two assists. Janay Legagneur added 10 points, five rebounds, two assists and one block. Spady registered a near double-double with eight points, eight rebounds, five assists, three blocks and one steal. Maria Negron had another great rebounding game with eight, while Grant contributed six points and eight rebounds off the bench. 

The Express owned the advantage in rebounds (55-28), points in the paint (48-14), bench points (35-2), fast break points (24-2), points off turnovers (20-7), assists (16-2), steals (11-6), blocks (11-2)  field goal percentage (40.5 to 23.5) and three point percentage (20.8 to 15.4). 

The Express travel Thursday (Jan. 19) for a hometown Region 15 rivalry game against #9 Hostos Community College inside The Swamp in Bronx, NY at 6:00 PM. 

ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 14 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
